# I engineer documentation systems that work for people and AI

I help teams turn product knowledge into clear, maintainable documentation that people can use and AI systems can retrieve. My work connects information architecture, API and developer docs, docs-as-code automation, and the content structures behind useful AI search and support.

What I usually walk into

Your team has the knowledge. It is just trapped in tickets, Slack threads, old docs, release notes, and engineer memory. I turn that into a system people can actually use.

You do not need a polished brief. Bring me the messy docs problem, the user complaints, or the migration that keeps slipping.

## Meet Nikhila Jain

I am a senior technical writer and documentation architect with 20+ years of experience across developer documentation, cloud platforms, APIs, docs-as-code workflows, and AI-ready content. I help teams make documentation credible again: easier to find, easier to maintain, and easier to trust.

## Bring me in when documentation is slowing the business down

Most teams do not need "more docs." They need the right system: clear structure, reliable ownership, search-friendly content, and writing that helps users move forward.

Content & enablement

### Make documentation useful to AI agents and clear to people

I engineer the knowledge layer behind AI search and agent workflows: trusted source material, task context, maintainable skills, and content that supports grounded answers.

- Map trusted sources and context
- Keep steps and meaning intact in retrieval
- Connect agent skills to maintained docs
- Test tasks; use traces to find gaps

### Move legacy docs into a workflow your team can maintain

I help teams migrate from scattered wikis, shared drives, and stale portals into docs-as-code systems with clear information architecture, review workflows, quality checks, and ownership.

- Legacy documentation to docs-as-code migration
- RAG-ready information architecture
- Docs-as-code CI automations
- Semantic search tuning + analytics

### Give developers the guidance they need before they ask support

I write onboarding paths, API tutorials, conceptual guides, release documentation, and contributor playbooks that help users understand what to do next and help internal teams contribute without chaos.

- Scenario-led developer onboarding journeys
- API tutorials and reference documentation
- Docs office hours and contributor enablement
- Voice & tone governance at scale

## Examples of the systems I can build, untangle, or improve

The public projects are self-initiated demonstrations. My professional systems work includes API specifications, generated references published on AWS, and automation I built with Node.js and Cloudflare.

### From API contract to published reference

I have written API specifications, built systems to generate API references, and published those references on AWS. I built supporting systems with Node.js and Cloudflare, connecting technical source material to a repeatable documentation output.

How I engineer for AI

## AI-ready docs start with a trustworthy knowledge system

Adding a chatbot does not fix fragmented or ambiguous source material. I work on the documentation layer that determines what an AI system can find, understand, and answer accurately.

### Context: give each answer the right source

Map trusted sources, ownership, version, audience, and permissions. Shape retrieved context so answers retain the product and task details they depend on.

### Skills: make agent guidance maintainable

Design task-specific agent skills that explain when to use a workflow, which authoritative docs to consult, what steps to follow, and when to ask for help.

### Harness: test real documentation tasks

Create representative questions and expected sources, then evaluate retrieval, answer grounding, version accuracy, citations, and task completion as the system changes.

### Traces: find where answers go wrong

Inspect the sources retrieved, context passed to the model, skills and tools used, and the final response. Trace evidence helps separate content gaps from retrieval or agent behavior.

This is the architecture I bring to AI documentation work. The public projects above are demonstrations; my professional API and automation work is described separately from those demos.

Documentation toolchain

## The practical toolchain behind durable documentation

The goal is not tooling for its own sake. The goal is documentation that stays current, survives product change, and gives your team a reliable way to publish, review, measure, and improve content.

### Docs-as-code automation & CI/CD

I wire documentation into the same CI/CD pipeline as code — Vale prose linting, broken-link detection, release-note generation, and changelog diffing — so every PR keeps docs accurate and shippable.

### AI-ready & RAG-optimized content

I restructure and tag documentation so it chunks cleanly for LLM retrieval, semantic search, and RAG pipelines — using OpenAPI specs, structured metadata schemas, and embedding-friendly headings.

Frontmatter schemas

Semantic chunking

Vector-search tuning

### Static site & developer docs platforms

I build and migrate documentation portals using modern static-site generators and developer-docs platforms — including full information architecture design, multi-sidebar navigation, and versioning strategies.

### Docs metrics & ROI measurement

I instrument documentation with search analytics, CSAT loops, and ticket-deflection funnels — so teams can prove docs ROI, prioritise content gaps, and tie documentation directly to activation and retention goals.
